Joseph Nicolas Nicollet
Joseph Nicolas Nicollet also known as Jean-Nicolas Nicollet (born July 24, 1786 in Cluses , France , † September 11, 1843 in Washington, DC ) was a French mathematician and geographer.
From 1817 he worked at the Paris observatory under Pierre-Simon Laplace . He later became a professor of mathematics at the Collège Louis-le-Grand . In 1832 Nicollet emigrated to the USA.
He led three expeditions to explore the Upper Mississippi . In 1839 he went to Washington, where he fell ill and died. In 1843 his Map of the Hydrographical Basin of the Upper Mississippi was published.
The Nicollet County in the US state of Minnesota and the lunar crater Nicollet are named after him.
