Joseph P. Vigorito

Joseph Phillip Vigorito (born November 10, 1918 in Niles , Ohio , †  February 5, 2003 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1965 and 1977 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Vigorito attended Strong Vincent High School in Erie until 1938 . During World War II , he served in the United States Army between 1942 and 1945 . He achieved the rank of first lieutenant and was awarded the Purple Heart . After the war he continued his education until 1947 at the University of Pennsylvania belonging Wharton School continued. He then studied at the University of Denver in Colorado until 1949 . Professionally, he was a sworn accountant. From 1949 to 1964 he was a member of the faculty of the Pennsylvania State University or the Pennsylvania State College affiliated with this university .

Politically, Vigorito became a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1964 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the 24th  constituency of Pennsylvania, where he succeeded Republican James D. Weaver on January 3, 1965 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1977 . These were shaped by the events of the Vietnam War , the civil rights movement and, in 1974, the Watergate affair .

In 1976 Joseph Vigorito was not re-elected. He was on the faculty of Georgetown University in 1977 and 1978 . In 1978 he applied unsuccessfully to return to Congress; after that he ceased to appear politically. He died on February 5, 2003 in the federal capital Washington and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
