Joseph Pach
Joseph Pach (born January 8, 1928 in Toronto ) is a Canadian violinist.
Pach had violin lessons with Chris Dafeff at the Toronto Conservatory of Music from 1933 to 1945 . He made his debut at the age of six at the MacKenzie King Century Club in Toronto with the Serenade by Enrico Toselli and at the age of twelve had already won three gold medals in the music competition of the Canadian National Exhibition . From 1945 to 1950 he studied with Kathleen Parlow at the University of Toronto .
He made his debut with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 1947 with Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto , after which he appeared as a soloist with several Canadian orchestras, including the CBC Vancouver Chamber Orchestra , the CBC Winnipeg Orchestra , the New Brunswick Symphony Orchestra and the Halifax Symphony Orchestra .
In 1954 Pach married the pianist Arlene Nimmons . After both won a 3rd prize at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich in 1960 , they performed as the Duo Pach . They made their debut on the BBC in 1961 with Ottorino Respighi's Sonata , performed at Wigmore Hall , Edinburgh, Frankfurt and Dublin in 1963 , and toured Canada the following year. They were musicians-in-residence at the University of New Brunswick in 1964 and premiered Jacques Hétus Double Concerto at the 1967 Charlottetown Festival .
Pach founded the University of New Brunswick Pach String Quartet (later Brunswick String Quartet ) with Andrew Benac , James Pataki and Ifan Williams (later with Pataki, Paul Campbell and Richard Naill ), of which he was a member until it was dissolved in 1989, and was a co-founder of the University of New Brunswick Chamber Music and All that Jazz Festival (1966–83).
