Joseph Square
Joseph Platz (born April 11, 1905 in Cologne , † December 30, 1981 in Manchester (Connecticut) , USA) was a German-American chess player .

First place played in Germany. In various tournaments he defeated Ludwig Engels , Georg Kieninger and Rudolf Spielmann, among others . In 1928 he won the tournament for the Rhine Championship in Karlsruhe without losing a game . In the USA he became friends with Emanuel Lasker and played many training games with him in 1939 and 1940.
Life
Platz completed a bank training and then studied medicine . From 1932 he worked as a doctor in the municipal hospital in Offenburg . Because of his Jewish origin, he fled to the seizure of power by the Nazi Party in 1933, first in the Switzerland and from there to New York . Here he worked at several hospitals. In 1952 he moved to East Hartford . His best historical rating was 2398. This he reached in August 1948. Platz was married to Esther Platz.
