Joseph Pohle

Joseph Pohle (born March 19, 1852 in Niederspay near Koblenz , † February 21, 1922 in Breslau ) was a Catholic dogmatist .

Life

Pohle studied in Trier, Rome (1871–1879, Collegium Germanicum ) - including astronomy with Angelo Secchi - and Würzburg (1879–1881). In 1878 he was ordained a priest. Pohle was first teacher in Baar , Switzerland from 1881 to 1883 , then from 1883 to 1886 professor of moral theology in Leeds , England, then there professor of exegesis and dogmatics, then from 1886 to 1889 professor of philosophy at the Philosophical-Theological University of Fulda . With Konstantin Gutberlet he founded the Philosophical Yearbook there in 1888 . From 1889 to 1893 he taught apologetics in Washington as the first occupation of the newly founded Catholic university . From 1894 to 1897 Pohle taught dogmatics in Munich, and from 1897 to 1921 at the Silesian Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Breslau . In 1915/16 he was rector . There he worked out his three-volume textbook on dogmatics for the purpose of accompanying lectures . It appeared in the first edition from 1902 to 1905 and quickly became a standard work that replaced the textbook by Herman Schell that had been indexed. Revisions were made by Michael Gierens and Josef Gummersbach . An English translation by A. Preuss was published in St. Louis from 1911 to 1917. From 1910 to 1912, Pohle worked at the Staatslexikon, also at the Catholic Encyclopedia , the Kirchlichen Handlexikon and the journals Der Katholik , Historisch Politische Blätter , Natur and Revelation .

Think

Pohl's doctrine of grace is shaped by Molinism . He was in opposition to modern philosophy. Pohles thesis is controversial that soldiers who die for their fatherland are in the rank of martyrs.
