Joseph Roger Jourdain (born December 11, 1845 in Louviers , Département Eure , † August 18, 1918 in Paris ) was a French painter . He later called himself Roger Jourdain.

Life

As the son of a wealthy textile manufacturer, Jourdain decided to become a painter. He studied in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts , among others with Alexandre Cabanel . In 1868 he traveled to Italy and Spain, where he copied the works of Diego Velázquez, to Egypt in 1873 and to England around 1882/83.

Jourdain settled on Boulevard Berthier in the 17th arrondissement and opened his studio there. His friends and colleagues Albert Besnard , Ernest Duez and John Singer Sargent lived in the neighborhood . In 1881 he married Henriette, only 19 years old, daughter of the painter Léopold de Moulignon . As a charming host, she inspired Besnard, Sargent and Giovanni Boldini to create charming portraits, while her composer friend Gabriel Fauré dedicated the song Aurore (1884) to her. Her husband also painted her several times.

1900-06 Jourdain was mayor of the Paris suburb of Rueil-Malmaison . Shortly after his son was killed in World War I , Roger-Joseph Jourdain also died in Paris. His widow retired to Blois ( Loir-et-Cher ), where she died in 1928.
