Joseph Schnetz

Joseph Schnetz (born November 28, 1873 in Vienna ; † August 2, 1952 ) was a German high school teacher . He is considered one of the most important name researchers in the German-speaking area.

Schnetz studied Classical Philology and Linguistics at the University of Munich . After completing his doctorate , he worked as a senior teacher at the Bavarian high school in Lohr am Main. From 1912/13 at the latest, Josef Schnetz held the title of royal high school professor . However, he achieved his most sustainable achievements outside of his profession. In 1925 he founded the magazine for place name research, the first specialist magazine of its kind in Germany. Six years later he took over the chairmanship of the Association for Location and Field Name Research in Bavaria

Schnetz was appointed honorary professor at the University of Munich in 1933 for his achievements in the field of onomastics . After the end of the Second World War he worked as a lecturer at the Philosophical-Theological University in Dillingen an der Donau .
