Joseph Sucher (born November 23, 1843 in Döbör (Doiber) ( St. Gotthardt District , Eisenburg County , Hungary), † April 4, 1908 in Berlin ) was an Austrian composer , conductor and conductor .

Life

Joseph Sucher received his first music lessons in Vienna as a choirboy of the imperial court orchestra, later studied law, but finally devoted himself entirely to music and, after completing a thorough study of composition, took over the direction of the Vienna Academic Choral Society under the direction of Sechters . He was then a répétiteur at the Court Opera in Vienna.

After he had also temporarily acted as Kapellmeister of the Komische Oper , in 1876 he accepted an appointment as theater conductor at the Leipzig Opera , where he made a great contribution to the performance of Wagner's musical dramas. In the following year he married the singer Rosa Hasselbeck , one of the leading artists at the Leipzig Opera. In 1879 both were appointed to the Hamburg City Theater , and in 1888 to the Berlin Opera House .

Joseph Sucher retired in 1899. He died on April 4, 1908 at the age of 64 in Berlin and was buried in the local St. Hedwig cemetery on Liesenstrasse . The tomb has not been preserved.
