Joseph-Marie Vien
Joseph-Marie Vien (born June 18, 1716 in Montpellier , † March 27, 1809 in Paris ) was a French painter .
Life
Vien was a student of the painter Charles-Joseph Natoire at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture and was able to take part in exhibitions at the Paris Salon at an early age . In 1743 Vien received the grand prix and as a result a royal travel grant to Italy . In the spring of the following year Vien went to Rome to the Académie de France (French Academy in Rome), which at that time still resided in a palace on the Corso .
After his return, Vien settled as a freelance painter in Paris and founded a painting school there in 1750 . In 1775 Vien was entrusted with the management of the French Academy in Rome. In 1781 Vien returned to Paris and at the beginning of 1789 was the first court painter to King Louis XVI. During the French Revolution , Vien appeared very little; but Napoleon Bonaparte became aware of Vien as a consul . In the year of his coronation, Napoleon made Vien a senator and imperial count.
Joseph-Marie Vien died in Paris on March 27, 1809 at the age of 92. The transition from French rococo to early classicism connects with Vien . Jacques-Louis David is considered to be the most important student of Vien .
