Joseph von Braganza , with full name José Francisco Xavier de Paula Domingos António Agostinho Anastácio de Bragança , (born  August 20, 1761 in Lisbon , Palácio Real da Ajuda ; †  September 11, 1788 ibid) was the eldest son of the Portuguese royal couple Peter III. and Prince Maria I of Beira ( Príncipe da Beira ) and since the death of his grandfather Joseph I in 1777 heir to the throne ( Infant ) of Portugal. As such, he carried the titles of Prince of Brazil ( Príncipe do Brasil ) and Duke of Braganza . He died of smallpox at the age of 27 during his mother's reign .

Life

Joseph's mother Maria the Pious was married as an infanta in 1760 to Peter, the king's brother, her uncle. After Joseph was born, the powerful Prime Minister Marquis of Pombal tried to establish the male succession to the throne and to exclude Mary from the reign. When Maria became queen after the death of her father in 1777, she immediately dismissed Pombal, whom she also rejected because of his anti-clerical church policy, which did not shy away from brutalities.

Joseph was considered intelligent. He received intensive training with a view to his future office. On February 21, 1777, three days before the death of King Joseph I, his grandfather, he was 15 years old and married to Maria Francisca Benedita of Portugal (1746-1829), his mother's sister. The marriage remained childless.

When Joseph died of smallpox in 1788, it increased the mental instability of his mother Maria, who had only two years before her husband Peter III. had lost. In 1792 Joseph's younger brother Johann became Prince Regent and after Mary's death in 1816 King.

Joseph was buried in the tomb of the House of Braganza in the São Vicente de Fora monastery in Lisbon. His mother had vowed at their wedding that a church would be built if she would give birth to an heir to the throne. This votive church , the Basílica da Estrela , was not completed until after Joseph's death in 1790 after long construction delays.
