The Panteão da Casa de Bragança is a pantheon with tombs of the members of the House of Braganza , which provided the kings of Portugal from 1640 to 1853 and the emperors of Brazil from 1822 to 1889 . He is housed in the São Vicente de Fora monastery in Lisbon .

history

In 1855, King Ferdinand II ( Dom Fernando II ) ordered the reburial of his ancestors, who had previously been buried in a small extension of the main altar of the monastery church of São Vicente . The former refectory of the monastery was used for the new Pantheon .

In the hall, the stone coffins are lined up on the side walls. Those of the regents are adorned with a crown. On the sides are the names and titles of the dead in gold letters. Four graves, including the marble sarcophagi created by Raul Lino for King Karl I, who was murdered in 1908, and his son Prince Ludwig Philipp , who died with him , stand in the middle of the room. The remains of King Peter IV , who was also Emperor of Brazil, were moved to the Monumento do Ipiranga in São Paulo in 1972 .

With royal permission, the Duke and Duchess of Terceira and the Duke of Saldanha are buried in the corridor to the Pantheon.
