Joseph or Josef von Giovanelli (also Joseph I. von Giovanelli ; * May 7, 1750 in Bozen ; † November 19, 1812 ibid) was a Tyrolean politician and freedom fighter .

Life

Giovanelli comes from the Giovanelli family of Gerstburg and Hörtenberg and was the landscape ordinator of the gentry and knighthood and the treasurer of the regional branch office. In the war years of the coalition wars from 1796 to 1801 and 1805 he made a contribution to the national defense of Tyrol. When the Austrian outposts reached Bolzano on April 13, 1809, he took Joseph von Hormayr into his house. From there, among other things, the Tyrolean popular uprising was organized and it became a center for the Tyrolean patriots around Andreas Hofer .

As President of the Bolzano Treasury Deputation, Giovanelli was able to procure weapons , ammunition and provisions as well as the necessary funds for national defense. In the end it was up to him, after initially nobody was found, to inform the rebels about the armistice. He was able to appease with his encouragement. In 1810 he wrote the epistle to Malsiner .

The freedom fighter and politician Joseph Freiherr von Giovanelli zu Gerstburg and Hörtenberg was his son, the politician Ignaz von Giovanelli zu Gerstburg and Hörtenberg his grandson.

Honors

For his services, Emperor Franz honored him in 1801 with the elevation to the baron class , but he did not accept the diploma. He also had to reject the Knight's Cross of the Royal Hungarian Order of St. Stephen, awarded in 1811, due to the political situation. With the highest resolution of July 16, 1839, his son Joseph von Giovanelli zu Gerstburg and Hörtenberg was raised to the baron status for his own and also expressly the merits of his father.
