Josephine Beatrice Bowman (born December 19, 1881 in Des Moines , Iowa , †  January 3, 1971 ) was Superintendent of the US Navy Nurse Corps of the US Navy .

Bowman graduated from the Medico-Chirurgical Hospital in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania as a nurse in 1904 and then joined the American Red Cross Nursing Service . In 1908, Bowmann went to the newly formed US Navy Nurse Corps. In 1911 she was appointed Chief Nurse.

In October 1914, Bowman temporarily left the Navy to work for the Red Cross in Great Britain . In May 1915, Bowman returned to the Navy. During World War I, Bowman served as Chief Nurse at the Naval Hospital in Great Lakes , Illinois and helped during the Spanish Flu between 1918 and 1919 .

In 1919, Bowman served as the first woman on a Navy warship , the USS Relief (AH-1) . Bowman was promoted to Superintendent Navy Nurse Corps in December 1922, and remained so until her retirement in 1935.

Bowman was the first female superintendent to receive a military rank. Bowman retired as Lieutenant Commander in 1935 .

Josephine Beatrice Bowman died on January 3, 1971 at the age of 89 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
