Former Josty Brewery (2010)

The Josty Brewery is a former brewery in Berlin-Mitte . The building from 1890-1891, located in an inner courtyard in the Rosenthaler Vorstadt , together with a street-side apartment building from 1878 and two three-storey commercial wings, which were built between 1860 and 1880, form a listed building group in Bergstrasse (Berlin ) .

history

The Josty brewery was founded by the Swiss Daniel Josty (1777-1845), who came to Berlin with his brother Johann Josty (1773-1826). Johann founded Café Josty , Daniel sold a chocolate drink in 1831 and founded the brewery, then in Prenzlauer Straße.

From 1890 the five-storey brewery building was built in a back courtyard in Bergstrasse by the architects Hermann Enders and Hahn in the romanticizing neo-renaissance style. The malt beer produced by Josty was a success. In 1903 the brewing trade was stopped again. The brewery was later used as a horse stable and sausage factory. The building, which was affected by repeated vacancies in the GDR era and after 1990, was renovated between 1994 and 1995 by the architects Elwardt and Lattermann . The architects were awarded a monument prize for preservation.
