Journal des débats
The Journal des débats ("Journal of Debates") was a widely read French newspaper ( journal ) that appeared in Paris from 1789 to 1944 (with changing names). Influential owners were members of the Bertin family, including Armand Bertin (1801-1854), who previously worked as editor-in-chief of the journal founded by his father Louis-François Bertin .

After the coup d'état of Napoleon , Louis-François Bertin and his brother had acquired the Journal des débats et des décrets de l ' assemblée nationale , which had existed since 1789 and which was published under him as the Journal des débats politiques et littéraires and soon the was the most important organ of the monarchist party.
In the German-language Neckar-Zeitung of September 22nd, 1822, for example, they were judged: "The Journal des Debats is, in general, written with talent; for a long time the sound principles in literature had no other refuge."
The newspaper had numerous famous employees, the philosopher and historian Hippolyte Taine, for example, or the composer and music critic Hector Berlioz . The preprint of Jules Verne's Journey around the Moon ( Autour de la Lune ) appeared in its feature section. A controversy between Ernest Renan , the author of The Life of Jesus , and the Muslim intellectual Jamal ad-Din al-Afghani was published in the Journal des débats .
The last director was Étienne Bandy de Nalèche.
