Joy in My Heart , also known as I've Got the Joy, Joy, Joy is a well-known Christian song that is mostly sung around campfires and at Boy Scout events.

The song was written by George William Cooke (* 1884 in Yorkshire , England , † 1951 in New York ) under the title Joy in My Heart . He secured the rights in 1926, but these were not renewed, making it public domain in the United States . Cooke was at the time pastor of a Methodist congregation in Wilmington , Delaware, and was a member of the so-called Gospel Crusaders.

The text has been changed and adapted over the years. The common first version of Cooke is presented here. This contains an introductory line of text, in verses 2 and 4 a biblical quote from the Luther Bible (I've got the peace that passeth understanding, as well as For there is therefore now no condemnation) and then the affirmation “Down in My heart”.

Dissemination and cultural references

The song found its way into various song books with a Christian background. In a slightly modified form, the song was also used on various children's song albums.

The rock 'n' roll singer Little Richard retired from show business for a few years in 1957 in favor of religious education. Nevertheless, he remained musically active and recorded sacred music for various record companies. On September 5, 1961, under the direction of Quincy Jones, he went to the New York studios of Mercury Records to record a gospel record, including his version of Joy in My Heart with an arrangement by Al Cohn . The recording appeared on single under the number 71884 as well as on the Mercury album It's Real .

In 2019, Pinkfong used the song as the basis for My Pet, My Buddy .

The Housemartins covered the song on their EP Think for a Minute .

Bob Gibson rewrote the lyrics as Joy, Joy in 1958 and released it on the album There's A Meetin 'Here Tonight . This version was used in a Coca-Cola advertisement as well as by Volkswagen France .

In the Simpsons episode In The Beginning Was The Word (Season 4, Episode 10) Rod and Todd Flanders sing the song in their sleep.

The Italian Oi! - / Ska band Los Fastidios recorded a cover version of the title in 2019 and named their ninth album Joy Joy Joy after the song.
