Juan Abelardo Mata Guevara SDB (born June 23, 1946 in Managua ) is a Nicaraguan religious priest and Roman Catholic bishop .

Life

After religious studies in the aspirantate of the Salesians of Don Bosco in San Salvador , Juan Abelardo Mata Guevara entered the novitiate of the Congregation in 1965 and made his first vows on December 8, 1966 . After completing his theological studies at the Instituto Teológico Salesiano de Guatemala , he was ordained a priest on August 15, 1976 . This was followed by bible scientific studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. On February 13, 1988 he was appointed auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Managua and transferred to him the titular diocese of Coeliana . The episcopal ordination donated him on March 16, 1989 in Managua Miguel Cardinal Obando Bravo SDB and the co-consecrators Archbishop Paolo Giglio and Archbishop Arturo Rivera y Damas SDB. On March 6, 1990, Pope John Paul II named him Bishop of Estelí as the successor to Bishop Rubén López Ardón . It was installed on April 5, 1990.

His bishop's coat of arms bears the motto Me hice todo para todos ( I have become everything to everyone ) ( 1 Cor 9:22  EU ).

From 1999 to 2002 he was Secretary General, then Vice President of the Bishops' Conference of Nicaragua (CEN). In this capacity he warned in September 2009 of a new wave of violence in Nicaragua if the opposition did not agree. Both the Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and the auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Managua, Silvio Baez Ortega OCD, criticized these statements at the time as church interference in politics. After President Ortega announced his renewed candidacy in the spring of 2011, although this was contrary to the constitution, the bishop accused the politicians involved:

"The sad truth is that for those in power the constitution is just a piece of toilet paper."
