Zvi Laron (* 6. February 1927 in Czernowitz , at that time Romania , today Ukraine ) is an Israeli Kinderendokrinologe and emeritus professors of Romanian origin.

Career and work

Zvi Laron began his medical education at the University of Timişoara . In 1948 he emigrated to Israel. He graduated from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1952. From 1956 to 1957, Laron worked in Boston at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School as a research and clinical fellow in pediatrics . He then went back to Israel, where he was director of the Institute of Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology of the Sackler Faculty of Tel Aviv University from 1958 until his retirement in 1992 .

Laron is considered to be the founder of child endocrinology in Israel. In 1966, together with Athalia Pertzelan and S. Mannheimer, he was the first to describe a new form of hypophysial short stature . In this genetic disease one is growth hormone deficiency by a somatotropin - resistance triggered. The disease is known as Laron's syndrome after its discoverer .

Honors

Laron has received a number of international awards. For example, he has been a member of the Leopoldina since 1987 . In 1998 he received the Natan Neiman Medal from the University of Nancy and in 1999 the Andrea Prader Award . In 2008 he became a Knight of the Order of the White Rose (Finland) and in 2009 he received the Israel Prize . He was awarded honorary doctorates by several universities, such as the University of Iuliu Hațieganu (1998), the University of Victor Babeș (2000) and the Università del Piemonte Orientale (2000).
