Juan Alberto Melgar Castro

Juan Alberto Melgar Castro (born June 26, 1930 in Marcala , La Paz Department , † December 2, 1987 at the Hacienda de San Antonio , Cortés Department ) was a Honduran general and from April 22, 1975 to August 7, 1978 President of Honduras .

Life

Under Tiburcio Carías Andino , he joined the Guardia de Honor Presidencial . Then he went to the officers' school where he was promoted to captain. He became the commandant of the Primer Batallón de Infantería and the commandant of the Zona Militar of San Pedro Sula . In 1972 in the government cabinet of Oswaldo López Arellano he became government minister and minister of justice administration. 1975 became commander in chief of the Fuerzas Armadas de Honduras .

As a result of the banana gate , Oswaldo López Arellano was replaced as head of state by Juan Alberto Melgar Castro on April 22, 1975 . Juan Alberto Melgar Castro nationalized the United Fruit railroad.

Masacre de los Horcones

On June 25, 1975, soldiers murdered 15 people, including two priests at the Hacienda Los Horcones , of Manuel "Mel" Zelaya, Manuel Zelaya's father in Olancho. Manuel Zelaya, Carlos Bahr, Major José Enrique Chinchilla, Lieutenant Benjamín Plata were sentenced to prison terms for the murders, were taken to the Penitenciaría Central and released due to an amnesty given by Policarpio Juan Paz García . Major Benjamín Plata, was sent to Panama by the government of Roberto Suazo Córdova as a military attaché .

During his tenure, a mediation agreement was signed to resolve the border conflict with El Salvador. The conflict had escalated into a football war. On July 19, 1976, a free trade area was decreed in Puerto Cortés. During his reign, the operation of casinos and private universities was legally sanctioned.

As commander-in-chief of the Fuerzas Armadas de Honduras , he was replaced by Policarpo Paz García, who took until August 8, 1978 to overthrow him. The junta that overthrew him consisted of General Policarpio Juan Paz García , General Domingo Álvarez Cruz, Commander in Chief of the Fuerza Aérea Hondurena and General Amílcar Zelaya Rodríguez, Head of Internal Security.

Melgar Castro died of a heart attack. His widow Nora Gúnera de Melgar was mayor of Tegucigalpa and 1997 presidential candidate of the Partido Nacional de Honduras .
