German Chess League 1980/81
The 1980/81 season was the first season of the newly founded single-track Bundesliga chess league . Due to the equality of points between the first two in the table after the regular season games, there was a playoff for the title between the defending champions Solingen SG 1868 and SG Porz . Solingen won this with 5½: 2½ and secured the first title of the German Chess League. During the season SG Porz had won against Solingen. qualification
From 1974 to 1980 the Bundesliga was played in four seasons. For the 1980/81 season these went over to a single-track Bundesliga. The following teams qualified for the new federal chess league:

Playoff
The tie-off match that took place in Solingen on May 30, 1981 saw the following pairings against SG Porz from Solingen's point of view:
- Spasski - Huebner : 0: 1
- Kavalek - Hort : Draw
- Hecht - Sigurjónsson : Draw
- Lehmann - Schmidt : 1-0
- Friehoff - Reefschläger : 1-0
- Lau - Tröger : Draw
- Dueball - Rumble : 1-0
- Better - Wolf: 1-0
Reefschläger was already at a disadvantage in the opening. In the endgame, during the time emergency phase, after a gross mistake Dueball's, Gerusel left out a brief mate after a knight sacrifice and lost instead.
