Juan Carlos García (born March 8, 1988 in Tela - † January 8, 2018 ) was a Honduran football player. He played in the position of defender and was under contract in his home country, England and Spain. For the national team of Honduras , he completed 39 internationals .

Career

García began his career in the youth teams of the CD Marathon , where he made the leap to the first team in 2007. After 53 league games and a single goal for Marathon, he moved to league rivals CD Olimpia with effect from the 2010/11 season . For Olimpia he played in 80 league games between 2010 and 2013; he achieved a total of four goals.

For the 2013/14 season García moved to Europe for the English second division side Wigan Athletic . In his first season, however, he did not appear in the league for his new club.

García was first appointed to the Honduran national football team in 2009. He made his debut on July 11, 2009 against Grenada (4-0) during the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2009 . He played a total of 39 games for his home country, with his only goal on February 6, 2013 in the World Cup qualifier against the USA (final score: 2: 1). He scored the goal with an overhead kick .

On May 8, 2014 García was appointed by coach Luis Fernando Suárez in the selection squad for the 2014 World Cup . It was used in the group matches against Ecuador and Switzerland.

In February 2015, Wigan coach Malky Mackay announced that García had leukemia . García died of the disease in January 2018 at the age of 29.
