Juan Fernández de Tovar ( 1340 - August 14, 1385 in Aljubarrota , Portugal , Lord of Berlanga and Admiral of Castile ) was a Castilian seaman. He died during the  Battle of Aljubarrota .

biography

In 1384, on the instructions of King  John I, he  succeeded his father Fernando Sánchez de Tovar as Admiral of Castile , who died of the plague during the siege of Lisbon , one of the acts of war in the  Portuguese Revolution of 1383 . He was the 21st Admiral of Castile. However, he only held the title for one year, as he was hit by several arrows and killed during the  Battle of Aljubarrota , in which the Castilian troops were defeated. The battle resulted in Portugal's victory over Castile in that war.

He became lord of Berlanga through his marriage to Elvira Leonor Tellez of Castile, the niece of Henry II . This marriage with the royal family was possible because Fernando Sánchez de Tovar (father of Juan), a determined defender of Henry II was. In his struggle for the throne of Castile against his stepbrother Peter I . With her he had a son.
