Juan Manuel Gálvez Durón

Juan Manuel Gálvez Durón (born June 10, 1887 in Tegucigalpa , † August 20, 1972 ibid) was President of Honduras from January 1, 1949 to November 16, 1954 .

Life

His parents were Benita Durón and the lawyer José María Gálvez Retes. He graduated from the Escuela de Derecho of the Universidad de Honduras in 1913 and was subsequently admitted to the bar and notary.

In 1920 he moved to Puerto Cortés, where he lived with Laura Barnes Paredes. Their first son Roberto Gálvez Barnes was born there. They later moved to Tela, where Juan Manuel Gálvez Barnes was born. In 1924 he was a delegate for the Departamento de Tegucigalpa (which is now the Departamento Francisco Morazán ) in the ninth constituent assembly. In 1924 he was government minister and private secretary of Miguel Paz Barahona in the government cabinet of Vicente Tosta Carrasco .

He was Minister of War and Aviation in the government cabinet of Tiburcio Carías Andino . He was a presidential candidate for the Partido Nacional de Honduras (PNH) in the 1948 elections.

Juan Manuel Gálvez Durón continued the export-oriented economic policy of Tiburcio Carías Andino, as well as the development of coffee growing and road construction. The Gálvez government continued the UFCO- friendly policies of their previous governments. The UFCO received in 1949 differed a very favorable contract for 25 years, the only slightly from the 15 years previously concluded contract.

There was a significant amount of press freedom. The Partido Liberal de Honduras was allowed to organize and a senior management of employees was introduced. A law on pension insurance was passed, but in practice it was only rarely effective. A statutory eight-hour working day, paid vacation, pay for work on public holidays and limited responsibility for employers in the event of accidents at work were decreed. The labor of women and children was regulated.
