Juan de Pareja

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Juan de Pareja (pron.echa; called el Esclavo ) (* 1606 or 1610 in Antequera , † 1670 in Madrid ) was a Spanish painter.

Juan de Pareja was a slave of Velázquez , who worked as his assistant in the workshop. The sources on Pareja's life and his activity as a painter are sparse and have legendary features. Juan de Pareja accompanied Velázquez on his second trip to Italy. Velázquez painted his portrait in Rome within a few days, which was exhibited in 1650 in the portico of the Pantheon . According to the treaty dated November 23, 1650, Velázquez released Pareja. The contract stipulated that Pareja would work for him for another four years. However, Pareja lived in his household until Velázquez's death and then in the house of Juan Bautista Mazo, Velázquez's son-in-law.

A total of around ten portraits and religious pictures by Pareja have survived. In his picture “The Calling of St. Matthew”, today in the Prado in Madrid, he painted himself.
