Judith of Hungary

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Judith of Hungary (* summer 1054 probably in Goslar ; † March 14, 1092/96) was the youngest daughter of Emperor Heinrich III. from his second marriage to Agnes de Poitou . Judith was Queen of Hungary in her first marriage to Solomon from 1063 and in her second marriage to Władysław I. Herman from 1088 Duchess of Poland.

Life

As the youngest daughter of Henry III. and Agnes von Poitou, Judith (also Judith-Sophie or Judith-Maria) was probably born in Goslar in summer 1054.

In 1058 she was betrothed to the Hungarian heir to the throne and fellow king Solomon as part of a peace treaty. In 1060 the two had to flee Hungary in the course of a dispute with Solomon's brother over the succession to the throne. They returned in 1063 with German help. The exact wedding date of the two is not known, one suspects the years between 1063 and 1066. In 1074 Salomon was overthrown, whereupon Judith lived in Regensburg from May or July 1074 to 1088 with short interruptions.

Solomon died around 1087, Judith married Duke Wladyslaw I Hermann of Poland in 1088. This second marriage of Judith also served to secure the peace and contributed to the peaceful shaping of the German-Polish relations in this case. On the occasion of her marriage she took the way a precious, by her brother Henry IV. Commissioned and St. Emmeram's Abbey produced Gospels which is now kept in the library of the cathedral chapter in Krakow to the Polish court.

Judith died on March 14th, but the year is unclear, the period between 1092 and 1096 is assumed.
