Protection of minors

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Conservation of young people is the name given to groups of young people from nature conservation associations, especially Pro Natura . The term is mainly used in Switzerland. There is no comparable central term in Germany, although there are numerous ecological youth associations .

history

The term "youth conservation" was used as early as 1933 when Paul Steinmann wrote a booklet for the journal "Schweizerische Lehrerbücherei für Naturschutz" on youth conservation. Nature conservation pioneers such as Steivan Brunies and Paul Sarasin also published in the same series . From 1962 a youth conservation group existed in Basel , from 1967 there was the “Club de l'observateur” in Yverdon-les-Bains . Their activities included summer camps and wildlife viewing excursions. They reported on these in “Schweizer Naturschutz”, the publication organ of the Swiss Confederation for Nature Conservation (today Pro Natura ).

The movement grew stronger in the 1980s. In 1987, for example, the Jugendnaturschutz Freiamt wrote an extensive documentation on "The Barn Owl in the Reuss Plain" and in 1989 on "Aktion Klärfrosch".

In 2014, the Pro Natura youth group Lucerne was awarded the environmental award (recognition award) of the Albert Koechlin Foundation for “48 years of tireless youth work in environmental protection”. The prize is endowed with CHF 20,000.

Associations and youth conservation groups

In Switzerland there are 43 Pro Natura youth conservation groups for children and adolescents between the ages of 6 and 14 (as of 2013). The youth groups organize events once or twice a month where the participants can learn more about nature and get actively involved in nature conservation projects, and they also hold summer and autumn camps . Group and warehouse manager courses from the central association as well as the children's magazine "Steini" round off the offer.

The Swiss bird protection organization SVS / BirdLife Switzerland has 66 youth groups, some of which are also referred to as "youth protection". Individual groups are also supported by the WWF .

Since 1991, up to 300 young people have been meeting every two years at “Ökotopia”, the largest youth nature conservation meeting in Switzerland.
