Steivan Brunies

Steivan Brunies , also Stephan Ernst Brunies (born February 18, 1877 in Cinuos-chel , community S-chanf ; † March 12, 1953 in Basel , resident in Klosters and Basel), was a Swiss teacher and nature conservationist .

Life

Brunies attended the teachers' seminar in Chur and later studied zoology and botany at the Zurich Polytechnic , at the University of Breslau , where he received his doctorate in 1900, and at the University of Zurich . He taught as a middle school teacher in Trogen , Winterthur , Zurich , Berlin-Pankow and, from 1908 to 1941, at the Realgymnasium Basel . One of his students there was Robert F. Schloeth .

From 1909 to 1935 he was secretary of the newly founded Swiss Confederation for Nature Conservation . Brunies was a co-founder of the Swiss National Park and was also its first supervisor from 1914 to 1941 and the treasurer of the Federal National Park Commission .

Steivan Brunies was a leading campaigner for nature conservation . Above all, he was very successful in conveying his concerns to the youth. He was also honored for the collection of old folk music in the Engadine . In memory of him, a train composition of the SBB type SBB RABDe 500 (ICN) and the Rhaetian Railway type RhB ABe 8/12 ("Allegra") were named after him.
