Jukums vācietis (born November 11, jul. / 23. November  1873 greg. In Jaunmuiža (municipality Jaunlutriņi) districts Saldus , Courland Governorate ; † 28. July 1938 ; Russian Иоаким Иоакимович Вацетис , Joakim Joakimowitsch Wazetis ) was a lettischstämmiger officer and brief Commander in Chief of the Red Army in the Russian Civil War . Although he was never a member of the Communist Party, he made a career in the Soviet Union. He was one of the few non-party people who held a high post in the Soviet Union .

He began his military career in 1891 in the army of the Russian tsar . During the First World War , he last commanded the fifth Latvian rifle regiment from Zemgale with the rank of colonel . After the October Revolution , he and his men joined the Bolsheviks . With these he was initially appointed commander of the so-called Division of the Red Latvian Rifles , an elite association of the Red Army in the Russian civil war. From July to September 1918 he was in command of the entire Eastern Front of the Reds. He then became the first commander in chief of all Soviet military units and was a member of the Revolutionary War Council from September 4, 1918 to July 8, 1919 . In July 1919, he was charged with membership in a counter-revolutionary organization and arrested on the basis of this false claim.

After his release from prison in 1922 he became a professor at the Soviet Military Academy, later the Frunze Military Academy .

On November 29, 1937, during the Great Terror , which was directed in particular against officials of Latvian origin, he was arrested on false charges of membership in a fascist Latvian organization and executed shortly afterwards on July 28, 1938 . After Stalin's death , he was rehabilitated in 1957.
