Jules Crevaux (born April 1, 1847 in Lorquin , Lorraine , † April 2, 1882 near Ipantipucu , Paraguay ) was a French explorer who excelled especially when exploring Guiana .

Crevaux studied medicine and joined the French Navy in 1868 . As a result, he came to Guyana twice and made the decision to explore the interior of the country.

When he returned to France, he took part in the Franco-German War as a volunteer under Léon Gambetta .

Creveaux began his first expedition to explore Guiana in July 1877. Starting from Cayenne , he roamed completely unknown territory. He crossed the Tumuk-Humak Mountains , the watershed between the Maroni and Jari , a tributary of the Amazon , and stated that it was possible to pass the Jari waterfalls.

On a second trip from 1878 to 1879 Crevaux went from Cayenne via the Oyapock , Paru , Ica and the Amazon to the Andes and returned to Cayenne via the Rio Japurá . The Paru was explored for the first time by Crevaux, as was the Japura, which was previously unknown for two thirds of its course. He found that the people of the Upper Japura, near the Pacific Ocean , speak the same language as the people of Guyana; at the same time he stated that they were anthropophagous .

Crevaux undertook a third journey in 1880, accompanied by the marine pharmacist Lejaune , with the aim of exploring the left tributaries of the Orinoco ; he drove the Magdalenenstrom to the vicinity of Bogotá , crossed the Cordilleras and then followed the Guaviare to the Orinoco.

Scarcely had he returned to France, he went again to South America in November 1881 with the intention of exploring the Paraguay and Amazon rivers; on this expedition he was attacked by Toba Indians on April 27, 1882 near Ipantipucu on the Río Pilcomayo and murdered with all his companions.
