Julián Oñate y Juárez (* around 1840 in Burgos ; † 1899 ) was a painter and decorator born and trained in Spain , who, however, worked for decades in Peru and Venezuela .

Life

In 1865, Oñate studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts of Cadiz . Two years later he won an award , the Premio de pintura elemental , in painting and went to Madrid to study at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando . During his time in Madrid he made a number of paintings that are now on display in the Museo del Prado . In 1873 he traveled to Peru with his wife Gertrude Bertolano, also a painter, where he opened the private art academy Escuela de Artes y Oficios in Lima and developed an intensive activity. In 1877 he received the bronze medal of the Exposición municipal in Lima. He was involved in the decoration of the Teatro Principal de Lima (1889) and in Trujillo (1894). In January 1895, Oñate traveled to Venezuela and worked first on the decoration of the city theater of Caracas , then on the design of the Palacio de Miraflores . No information is available about his last years of life and creativity. The place of his death is also not documented.

The most famous works include portraits, e.g. B. a rider portrait of President Andrés Avelino Cáceres (1887) and a portrait of President Morales Bermúdez (1890). He also portrayed the bullfighter Diego Prieto, Plaza de Acho (1892) and Maria Luisa Tenaud (1890) or Carlos Jimenez (1893). His largest work is Botella de champagne con amorcillos (height 360.5 cm × width 130.5 cm, 1897). Further works are now in the Palacio de Miraflores and in the Galería de Arte Nacional in Caracas.
