Julia Lovell
Julia Lovell (born 1975 ) is a British sinologist and translator into English.
Life
Julia Lovell lived in China for a long time and did research at the History Institute of Peking University and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences . She taught modern Chinese history and literature at Queen's College of Cambridge University and is a senior lecturer in Chinese history at the Department of History, Classics and Archeology of Birkbeck College of the University of London .
She is a freelance writer for The Times , The Guardian , The Economist and The Times Literary Supplement . In addition to some literary translations into English, she has published three monographs of her own.
In 2008 she was a finalist for the Kiriyama Prize with her translation of I love Dollars by Zhu Wen . Her research was funded with the Philip Leverhulme Prize in 2010 . In 2012 she received the Jan Michalski Prize in Switzerland for her book The Opium War . In 2019 Lovell was elected to the British Academy .
