Julia Pitera

Julia Teresa Pitera , née Zakrzewska , (born May 26, 1953 in Warsaw ) is a Polish politician of the Platforma Obywatelska ( Civic Platform ), since 2007 State Secretary in the Chancellery of the Polish Prime Minister and since 2014 a member of the European Parliament .

Life and political activity

She attended the general high school Bolesław Chrobry ( Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Bolesława Chrobrego ) in Warsaw and then studied at the University of Warsaw . Julia Pitera graduated there in 1977 with a Masters in Polish Studies . During her studies, she worked as a Polish teacher at the Warsaw Dąbrowski High School. In 1981 she started working for the documentation of modern literature at the Institute for Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences . Julia Pitera passed her diploma examination at the academy in 1989 as an employee for scientific documentation. She stayed at this institute until after the political reforms in Poland and the beginning of the Third Polish Republic .

In 1991 Julia Pitera became an employee in the office of the President of the Republic of Poland and stayed there until 1994. In 1994 she became the director of the television program Pytania o Polskę , which was shown weekly on TVP2 . According to her own statement, she was not politically active until 1994. In 1981 she became a member of Solidarność , from 1990 to 1991 a member of the Porozumienie Centrum ( alliance of centers ) and from 1994 to 1998 a member of Unia Polityki Realnej ( Union for Realpolitik ). With the latter, she became a member of the Warsaw City Council in 1994. Without giving up her work as a city council, she became a member of Transparency International Poland in 1998 , where she was a member of the board between 1999 and 2001 and then chairwoman of the board until 2005. In 2001 Julia Pitera also became a member of the Council for Supervision of Press Freedom of the Polish Association of Journalists . In 2002 Julia Pitera applied unsuccessfully for the post of Mayor of Warsaw. In 2005 she ended her membership of Transparency International and became a member of the Civic Platform and in the parliamentary elections in the same year she gained a seat in the Sejm . In 2005, this also ended her work on the Warsaw City Council. She was able to defend her mandate for the Sejm in the early elections in 2007 . On November 22, 2007 Julia Pitera became State Secretary in the office of Prime Minister Donald Tusk .

In the 2014 European elections , Pitera was elected to the European Parliament .

Julia Pitera is married and has one son.
