Julia Quinn

Julia Quinn is a pseudonym of the author Julie Pottinger (* 1970 in the USA as Julie Cotler ). She writes historical romance novels set in Great Britain during the Regency period in the early 19th century .

Her books appear in many countries in English and in Germany , Russia , Taiwan , Poland , Norway , Italy and Korea in the respective national language.

She chose her pseudonym so that her novels would appear on bookstore shelves alongside the Regency romance novels by successful author Amanda Quick .

Life

Julia Quinn grew up mainly in New England , but also spent time in California after her parents divorced . From childhood she was an avid reader and devoured " The Chronicles of Narnia " by Lewis , among others . As she got older, to the chagrin of her father, she began reading love stories for teenagers. In order to be able to continue reading these, she told him that it was research because she wanted to write such stories herself. As a result, she wrote the first two chapters of a novel in one evening, which she completed and sent in three years later. However, it was rejected by the editors of the Sweet Dreams series (love stories for teenagers).

In her senior year at Harvard University , Quinn found she didn't know what to do with her bachelor's degree in art history . Eventually she decided to become a doctor. But in order to be accepted at a "Medical School", she had to take additional courses. During this time she began writing Regency romance novels. When she finally had to choose between studying at Yale University or Columbia University , her first two novels, Splendid and Dancing At Midnight, had become the subject of a dispute between two publishing houses. As a result, Quinn received more money for her novels than is usually the case for first-time works and she decided to postpone her studies in order to be able to continue writing. After three published novels and three more that were soon to appear, Julia Quinn began her medical studies at Yale, which she gave up after a few months to devote herself entirely to writing.

She currently lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband .

Quinn's novels quickly won many fans because of their light humor and witty dialogues. The plot is carried less by external events than by the main characters. The fact that Quinn's heroines are more modern and feminist than one would expect from women from the Regency era gives their stories liveliness and makes it easier to identify with the characters.

Some book titles are based on movie titles. The title "How to Marry a Marquis" is based on an idea by Regency author Candice Hern , who was inspired by the film " How to Marry a Millionaire ". Since she couldn't use it herself, she allowed Quinn to exploit her idea. Their publisher was enthusiastic and so their next novel was renamed from "Starry Night" to "To Catch an Heiress". So the title is based on " To Catch a Thief ". Also the titles "The Duke and I" (" The king and I ") and "The Viscount Who Loved Me" (" The Spy who loved me ") show that they are related to the corresponding film titles.
