Julia von Blumenthal

Julia von Blumenthal (born July 29, 1970 in Marburg ) is a German political scientist .

Scientific career and topics

Von Blumenthal studied political science, law and Russian studies at the universities of Heidelberg and Hamburg between 1989 and 1996 . After completing her master's degree , she worked as a research assistant at the Helmut Schmidt University , and received her doctorate in 2001 . In 2001 she was research assistant to Michael Hereth , from 2002 to 2007 to Wolfgang Gessenharter . In 2007 she was a visiting fellow at the University of New South Wales and a deputy professor for political science with a focus on the government system of the Federal Republic of Germany at Leuphana University Lüneburg . After another substitute professor in Giessen in 2008, she was appointed to the Humboldt University in Berlin in 2009. She is the successor to Gert-Joachim Glaeßner Professor at the Institute for Social Sciences in the Department of Domestic Policy of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Her main areas of work are parliamentarism , federalism , normative questions of governance and approaches to governance research and neo-institutionalism.

Institutional engagement

Von Blumenthal was Vice Dean for Studies and Teaching at the Philosophical Faculty III (since 2014 Faculty of Culture, Social Sciences and Education) until March 2012, and was Dean from April 2014 to July 2018 . In 2016, she became a candidate for the Vice Presidency for Studies and Teaching at the HU Berlin, but withdrew her candidacy when the student representatives indicated that they would not support her.

At the beginning of May 2018 she was elected as the new President of the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) . She took office on October 1st. Her ancestor Georg von Blumenthal , dean of the cathedral of the Lebus diocese , was rector of the university in Frankfurt in 1513.
