Life

Juliana Puricelli was born in 1427 in the small town of Cascina Verghera near Busto Arsizio in northern Italy . Her father wanted to force her into marriage, whereupon she left her family in 1454. She joined Katharina Moriggi , who had been a hermit on the Holy Mountain of Varese since 1451 . Katharina and Juliana lived according to the Augustine rules and had adopted the Ambrosian rite . The community of two grew up to six women by 1460 and founded the monastery of the Ambrose Sisters in 1474. After the death of the first abbess Katharina, Juliane was elected her successor and held this office until her death on August 15, 1501.

Beatification and Adoration

Together with Katharina Moriggi she was confirmed as Blessed on September 16, 1769 by Pope Clement XIV (1769–1774). Roman Catholic memorial day is August 14, while according to the Ambrosian rite, memorial day falls on April 27. Their bones were raised and are kept in the church of San Leonardo in Pallanza , in a reliquary . A primary school in Busto Arsizio bears her name.
