Julien Auguste Marie Joseph Liebaert (born June 22, 1848 in Kortrijk , West Flanders , Belgium , † September 16, 1930 in Ternat , Flemish Brabant , Belgium) was a Belgian politician of the Catholic Party .

biography

After attending school, he studied law and, after gaining a doctorate in law, worked as a lawyer in Kortrijk and Brussels .

He began his political career from 1877 to 1890 as a member of the Council of the Province of West Flanders. In 1890 he was elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies for the first time as a candidate for the Catholic Party .

In January 1899 he was first appointed finance minister in a government by Prime Minister Jules Vandenpeereboom .

In the subsequent cabinet of Prime Minister Paul de Smet de Naeyer , he was first Minister of Labor and Industry from August 1899 to 1900 and then, after a cabinet reshuffle, from 1900 to May 1907 Minister of Post, Railways and Telegraphy.

On May 1, 1907, Prime Minister Jules de Trooz again appointed him Finance Minister in his government. He also held this office in the subsequent government of Prime Minister Frans Schollaert until June 18, 1911. In the meantime, in January 1908, he was also Minister of the Interior for a few days.

After leaving the government, he was honored with the title of Minister of State on February 22, 1912 for his political services .

He then became director and board member of the National Bank of Belgium . After he resigned from the Chamber of Deputies in 1919, he was elected as a representative of the Catholic Party to the Senate and was a member of it until 1925.
