Julio Ruiz de Alda

Julio Ruiz de Alda Miqueleiz (born October 7, 1897 in Estella , Navarra , † August 23, 1936 in Madrid ) was a Spanish airplane pilot and politician.

Ruiz de Alda joined the Spanish Army at the age of 15 and graduated from the Artillery Academy in Segovia , then the pilot school in Getafe and founded the Compañía Española de Trabajos Fotogramétricos Aéreos (CETFA).

He was the copilot of the Plus Ultra aircraft during the Atlantic crossing of 1926. The Plus Ultra took off on January 22 from Palos de la Frontera in the province of Huelva and landed on January 26 in Buenos Aires , Argentina . There were stops in Gran Canaria , Cape Verde , Pernambuco , Rio de Janeiro and Montevideo . The distance of 10,270 kilometers was covered in 59 hours and 39 minutes. The other pilot of the plane was Ramón Franco , brother of General Francisco Franco . Together with Ramón Franco he also wanted to cross the world in a Dornier Do 16 , but the preparations for it failed in 1928.

Ruiz de Alda was co-founder and founding chairman of the small fascist party Falange in 1931, together with José Antonio Primo de Rivera . After the attempt of a military coup d'état from Morocco on July 17, 1936, supported by the Falange, he was arrested and taken to the Cárcel Modelo de Madrid prison, where he died on August 23 under unknown circumstances (he was probably murdered ). The coup d'état and the ensuing Spanish Civil War ultimately led to Francisco Franco becoming dictator of Spain.

The death of Ruiz de Alda is said to have led Ramón Franco and his own brother Eustaquio Ruiz de Alda to support the coup. Eustaquio Ruiz de Alda fell in North Africa in 1937.
