Julius Boettcher

Julius Böttcher (* 1886 ; † 1970 ) was a German teacher, local researcher , palaeontologist and fossil collector .

Life

Julius Böttcher was a teacher and worked as a teacher in Ohrdruf . He collected fossils in the vicinity of Ohrdruf and over the years put together an extensive collection of fossils from the Thuringian Triassic .

In autumn 1934 he initiated the establishment of the Heimatmuseum Schloss Ehrenstein in Ohrdruf and made a large part of his fossil collection available as the basis for the museum. After the first department of the museum could be opened on this basis on August 1, 1935, Julius Böttcher became head of the municipal museum of local history in Ohrdruf. In 1937 he encouraged the formation of a working group to research the Upper Muschelkalk of Thuringia, where he gave a lecture on the sequence of layers of the Upper Muschelkalk near Ohrdruf and a few rare fossils at a meeting in the Natural History Museum in Erfurt on March 6, 1938 .

With his publication on the Muschelkalkmeer around Ohrdruf in 1938 he made known the fossil record found in the vicinity of Ohrdruf and the knowledge he gained in the process.

As a paleontologist he is the first to describe the Triassic cephalopod Germanonautilus tridorsatus ( Böttcher 1938).

In 1951 he took over the management of the city archives in Ohrdruf as the city archivist. He continued to study the history of Ohrdruf and published an extensive work in four volumes on it from 1955 to 1960.

He was a member of the West Thuringian Homeland Association and since 1925 a member of the Thuringian Geological Association .

The Julius-Böttcher-Strasse in Ohrdruf was named in honor of Julius Böttcher.
