Gottheil: View over Altona

Julius Gottheil (born June 18, 1810 in Lissa / Posen; † December 8, 1868 in Königsberg ) was a German draftsman and painter.

Life

Gottheil was the son of a merchant. In 1831 he was baptized in Danzig. Dated works by him are known from 1829. In his time in Gdańsk, these were predominantly lithographic views that he had been printing in his own lithographic company since around 1840. Paintings and watercolors, on the other hand, are known only in small numbers. On Kunstverein exhibitions in Gdansk (from 1836) and Kaliningrad (1845) drawings were shown by him from Southern Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Greece and Konstantin Opel. Since the years around 1840 he has increasingly published albums and works with views of landscapes and cities. In 1850 he moved with his family to Hamburg, where BS Behrendsohn published many of his views until 1857. In addition to single sheets, other portfolios and series with views of northern German cities and regions were published, now mostly steel engravings based on his drawings. Other views and event pictures were published as wood engravings in illustrated magazines based on his preliminary drawings , some only posthumously . In addition, he performed as a lecturer, reported on his travels, on astronomy and accompanied this with nebula images and other projections . His sons, Richard Theodor in Danzig and Louis Emil in Königsberg, ran photo studios from 1864/65, which existed until the end of the Second World War.
