Julius Hoffmann (pedagogue)

Karl August Julius Hoffmann (rarely also Carl ; born November 30, 1812 in Clausthal , † March 24, 1869 in Lüneburg ) was a German teacher and classical philologist .

Life

Hoffmann received his first training at the Clausthal School . In 1829 he went to the University of Göttingen , where he attended lectures from Otfried Müller , Friedrich Christoph Dahlmann and Jacob Grimm, among others . After completing his studies in philology, he went to the Celle grammar school as a teacher in 1833 , where he remained until 1848. In 1849 he moved to the Lüneburg grammar school as rector .

When a teachers' meeting was called by the high school college in Hanover in 1848, Hoffmann chaired the free preliminary meeting. At the teachers' meeting itself he was elected second president. At this meeting, the school system was far-reaching. In addition, he was one of the central figures in the commission convened by the Oberschulcolleg to draw up orthographic rules and a corresponding dictionary .
