Siegfried Schuster (born March 5, 1936 in Zittau ; † January 30, 2018 in Radolfzell ) was a German ornithologist , secondary school teacher and nature and environmental activist .

Life

Siegfried Schuster, who was born and raised in Zittau in 1936, joined the Ornis bird protection group under Heinz Knobloch as a teenager in 1952 . In 1956 Schuster fled the GDR and first went to Wuppertal . After studying to be a teacher in Weingarten , he taught in Pfullendorf until 1962 and then - until his retirement in 1997 - for 35 years at the secondary school in Radolfzell in the subjects of biology and chemistry . As early as the 1960s, Schuster was one of the leading ornithologists in the Lake Constance area , volunteered for nature conservation and campaigned politically for the protection of birds . a. since 1958 through his participation in the Ornithological Working Group Bodensee (OAB) in Konstanz . During this time he began to publish on ornithological topics of the Lake Constance area. In December 1960, Schuster, along with Harald Jacoby and Gerhard Knötzsch, was one of the founders of the "Ornithological Circulars for the Lake Constance Region", whose field research he remained until his death. In the following years a total of around 100 publications were made in magazines and books, including as a co-author of the three great Avifaunen of Lake Constance in 1970, 1983 and 1999.

In Radolfzell, Schuster initiated his own environmental office as a voluntary environmental officer. From 1985 he was elected to the state board of the German Federation for Bird Protection DBV and was NABU state chairman in Baden-Württemberg from 1989 to 1997 . During this time, Schuster had a decisive influence on the development of the association in Baden-Württemberg. As a pioneer of a modern nature and environmental protection association, he campaigned for the change from the former "German Association for Bird Protection" (DBV) to a thematically broader, political nature conservation association NABU. The specific nature protection by active people in NABU on site was just as important to him as the associated political demands: "Nature protection on 100 percent of the area". Schuster demanded not to withdraw to individual NABU nature reserves, but to intervene for nature-friendly agriculture and forestry as well as against the use of land by constantly building new roads and settlements. Schuster's last publications are devoted to the "area shifts" of individual bird species as a result of global warming .

As a pioneer of a new type of conservation developed Schuster the "semi-quantitative grid mapping " as a method to changes in the bird world via breeding bird - monitoring to make measurable. His main focus was on the effects of climate change and moulting in water birds. Together with Gerhard Thielcke , Schuster founded the “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Naturschutz Bodensee” and headed the NABU Group in Radolfzell. The dialogue and cooperation with the later BUND co- founder Thielcke gave him important impulses for the new conception of the Bund for bird protection, which he pushed forward as part of the state executive board and later as state chairman. He did not shy away from the substantive argument. As head of the largest NABU regional association, he self-confidently called for these changes in content and structure at the NABU federal association.

Siegfried Schuster died on January 30, 2018 in Radolfzell. His son is the literary scholar Jörg Schuster .
