Julius Mende
Julius Mende (* 1944 in Salzburg ; † April 17, 2007 in Lower Austria ) was an Austrian artist , author , teacher and politician .
Life
From 1964 to 1968 he studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts with Max Weiler . In the 1968 movement he was one of the most provocative artists. Later he turned to pedagogy. He taught in schools as well as at the Pedagogical Academy and the Academy of Fine Arts. He also took on teaching positions at various institutes. From the early 1970s Mende became involved in the Association of Democratic Teachers Austria and became a member of the Communist Party of Austria ( KPÖ ). Mende was a member of the Central Committee of the KPÖ, the Central Committee, for more than a decade. After the collapse of the communist systems in Eastern Europe, Mende was national spokesman for the KPÖ from 1991 to 1994 and campaigned for the renewal of the KPÖ.
The subject of sexuality played a central role in his pictures and texts. In his book “Die Sexuelle Welle” he spans the uptight post-war period through the sexual “revolution” in the communes (1960s and 1970s) to the influence of consumer society on sensuality.
Mende was a co-founder of the “Verlag für Gesellschaftskritik” (today: Döcker Verlag) and one of the initiators of the WUK . He also accompanied the occupation of the slaughterhouse in Sankt Marx and the arena movement. As an author or editor, he was involved in the creation of numerous social science and art education publications. From 1991 until she was hired in 2002 , Mende was editor-in-chief of the KPÖ magazine “Weg und Ziel”.
Julius Mende was married to Bärbel Mende-Danneberg .
