Julius Karl Wilhelm Philipp Menzer (born August 31, 1845 in Neckargemünd ; † January 28, 1917 there ) was a Baden wine wholesaler, Greek consul in Mannheim and a member of the Reichstag for the German Conservative Party .

Life

He attended the boys' institute in Kornthal. From February 1, 1867, he was the head of the JF Menzer company with headquarters in Neckargemünd and branches in Frankfurt am Main, Berlin and Patras. Menzer is said to have been the first to import Greek wine to Germany and also had a cigar mail order company.

In 1882 Menzer opened the first Greek wine bar "Zur Stadt Athen" in the Beuttner family's wine business in Neckargemünd, which had been in existence since 1819, followed by other bars in Mannheim, Hanover, Gießen and Frankfurt. The branch in Berlin was opened on November 10, 1883 at Leipziger Strasse 31. One room in Frankfurt was painted with Greek landscapes by Karl Julius Grätz and Max Thiele, the other by Georg Widmann. The wines in the rooms were named after Greek heroes such as "Achilles" and "Odysseus", until the end of 2012 (closing) the "Kutscherschorle", a mixture of dry Palatinate wine and golden yellow Greek Samos, was served in the room in Neckargemünd.

In August 1888 Menzer held a big festival in honor of the then 20-year-old Greek Crown Prince and later King Constantine , who was studying in Heidelberg at the time.

In 1892 he had a neo-renaissance- style villa built by the architect Leonard Schäfer in Neckargemünd on Dilsberger Strasse , which - albeit with some structural changes - still exists today. The wine trading company he founded came to an end in the years after 1945, mainly as a result of the currency reform.

He was the royal Greek consul in Mannheim for Baden , the Rhine-Palatinate and Alsace-Lorraine. He was also a member of the Heidelberg Chamber of Commerce and the Protestant parish council in Neckargemünd as well as the commander of the local fire department. In 1886 he published the small text "The relief of small and medium-sized property". Menzer founded the Baden section of the Federation of Farmers in Heidelberg in 1893 . From 1884 to 1893 he was a member of the German Conservative Party in the Reichstag . He represented the constituency of the Grand Duchy of Baden 12 (Heidelberg - Eberbach - Mosbach - Neckargemünd). In addition to the debt relief of small and medium-sized property holdings, the homestead legislation and domestic tobacco growing were his most important concerns in the Reichstag.

Menzer Park and Julius-Menzer-Straße in Neckargemünd are named after him .
