Adolf Julius Söhn (* 1868 in Saarlouis ; † 1943 in Düsseldorf ) was a Düsseldorf photographer , "who was allowed to use the designation court photographer , opened his first studio in 1893".

Life

Julius Söhn founded a photo studio in Düsseldorf in 1892. Around 1902 his studio was located at Kasernenstrasse 22, where he offered photographs of "Düsseldorf views" as well as the production of "advertising signs" and became a court photographer for the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen house .

In June 1893 Julius Söhn had married Augusta Amalie Josephine Jansen (1868–1943), who was a granddaughter of the Düsseldorf painter Peter Schwingen (1813–1863). The sons Oskar (1897–1978), Julius and Gerhart emerged from the marriage. Söhn made a dedication copy for the Düsseldorf industrial and commercial exhibition for Grand Duke Friedrich von Baden . Together with his son Oskar, Julius Söhn was commissioned to document the exhibition Creative People in 1937 .

The photo of the unrestored Schwingen self-portrait

The painter Peter Schwingen belonged to Söhn's family by marriage . Two photographs of a lost self-portrait Schwingen, which show the condition of the painting before and after the restoration, have been preserved in the Peter Schwingen Archive. Julius Söhn documented the paintings by Schwingen accessible to him, especially the portraits of the Schwingen family, so that his archive is an important source for Schwingen research. For his part, Söhn was portrayed by the painter Franzjosef Klemm .

Julius Söhn's estate was purchased by the Düsseldorf City Archives in 1975. Of the approximately 2200 glass plates with Düsseldorf motifs from the period up to around 1930, paper prints were made by the Landesbildstelle that can be used in the archive. In the meantime, the Söhn photo collection has been digitized.

The Foto-Söhn business is still run by family members in Düsseldorf. It has been located at Flinger Strasse 20 since 1959 .

reception

"... that Julius Söhn can be regarded as one of the most important Düsseldorf photographers not only because of his role as city chronicler, but also because of the artistic quality of his work."
