Julius Schwabe (semiotic)

Julius Schwabe (* 1892 in Basel ; † 1980 ) was a Swiss symbol researcher and translator .

Life

Julius Schwabe was a son of the publisher Benno Schwabe . After attending the humanistic grammar school in Basel, he studied art history , philosophy and Romance philology at the universities of Basel and Berlin from 1911 . Extensive study trips took him to Florence , Siena and Rome . He received his doctorate in Basel in 1917. An encounter with Hans Kayser and his work led him to focus on symbol research in the 1940s. He also dedicated his main work Archetype and Zodiac to Kayser , in which he had processed historical and ethnographic material on the sign language of the ancient peoples and the still living "primitives" that he had collected over many years. Schwabe was also the initiator of the symbolist conferences that have taken place every year since 1951. Since 1960 he published the magazine Symbolon, yearbook for symbol research .
