Julius Weiler

Julius Weiler (* 1850 in Cologne ; † 1904 ) was a German chemist and industrialist .

Life

Born as the son of the businessman Joseph Wilhelm Weiler (1819–1875), Julius Weiler studied chemistry at the Stuttgart Polytechnic . In 1869 he became a member of the Stauffia Corps . After the Empire he moved to the University of Strasbourg , where he in 1874 with a dissertation on the subject over the action of methylal on toluene, benzyl chloride and diphenyl , which he at Adolf von Baeyer had made, to Dr. phil. received his doctorate. During his time in Strasbourg he made the acquaintance of Edmund ter Meer .

After the sudden death of his father, Julius Weiler took over the management of his father's aniline factory JW Weiler & Cie. in Ehrenfeld . With a market share of 35%, the factory was one of the leading aniline producers in the German Empire in 1880 . In 1880 he started the production of nitric acid in the factory in Müngersdorf and in 1881 took over the Wöllner'sche sulfuric acid factory in Cologne-Riehl . After the transformation into a stock corporation in 1889, the company operated under the name Chemische Fabriken, vorm. JW Weiler & Cie . In the same year, the Roburit factory in Witten was taken over. In 1896 he and his biggest customer, the Uerdinger tar paint factory Dr. E. ter Meer & Cie merged the chemical factories, vorm. Hamlet of the sea . To optimize logistical costs, the production of aromatic amines was completely relocated to Uerdingen and the Ehrenfeld plant was closed.

Weiler's business success factors included a commitment to technological innovation, product diversification, high quality and the creation of long value chains.

After Julius Weiler's death, Edmund ter Meer took over sole management. In 1916, the chemical factories in front of the Weiler-ter Meer merged with the Triple Alliance (Agfa, BASF and Bayer) and the Dreierverband (Hoechst, Cassella, Kalle) to form the interest group of German tar paint factories .

In 1898 Weiler was one of the founders of the Uerdingen wagon factory .
