Hermann Edmund ter Meer (born July 31, 1852 in Krefeld , † November 5, 1931 in Krefeld- Uerdingen ) was a German chemist and entrepreneur . He was the son of Hermann Eduard ter Meer and father of Fritz ter Meer .

Life

After studying chemistry and subsequent doctorate as well as practical work in scientific laboratories (factory of his uncle Heinrich Tillmanns, brief work at BASF ), he founded the Dr. tar paint factory on the banks of the Rhine in Uerdingen in 1877. E. ter Meer & Cie . From the merger with the chemical factories in 1896 , vorm. J. Weiler & Cie. The Uerdingen plant of the Bayer AG paint factory was finally established .

Its social responsibility as an entrepreneur was ter Meer through the establishment of a company health insurance (1885), a pension fund for employees (1898) and a relief fund justice (1903).

In addition, he was active in local politics: Edmund ter Meer was a member of the City Council of Uerdingen for the National Liberal Party from 1886 to 1919 and 1920 to 1924 , and from 1899 to 1919 he was also an honorary alderman of the city. During the German Empire , he was honored for his services with the award of the non-academic titles of Commerce Councilor (1899) and Privy Councilor of Commerce (1911).

Ter Meer also proved to be a promoter of the school system, especially the later Uerdinger Gymnasium (today: Gymnasium Fabritianum). He donated 25,000 marks for the expansion of a higher city school. On the occasion of his 70th birthday, the city of Uerdingen granted him honorary citizenship .

In Krefeld he was a member of the boards of the museum association and the chamber of commerce . In addition, he was on the administrative board of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry and in 1926 was a member of the IG Farben supervisory board .

The privy councilor Dr. E. ter Meer Foundation awards the Dr. Edmund ter Meer Prize . The Bonn University Society has been responsible for the foundation since 1948.
