The frog bulrush is very similar to the species Juncus bufonius , but differs in the following features: The short-pointed, blunt tepals, which are at most as long as the capsule, the (compared to the inner) significantly longer outer tepals, the capsule valves, which are appear trimmed when opening by folding in the tip, as well as by the reddish leaf base and the 2 or 3 flowers approaching each other .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.

Distribution and location

The frog bulrush is found in the temperate zones of Eurasia and northwest Africa. The salt-tolerant plant colonizes salt plant corridors, moist meadows and ruderal areas and short-lived muddy soil pioneer corridors. In Germany it is quite common on the coasts, while it is only scattered inland. It is a character species of the Isoeto-Nanojuncetea class, but also occurs in societies of the Agropyro-Rumicion association.
