Yuri Alexandrovich Orlov

Yuri Alexandrovich Orlov ( Russian Юрий Александрович Орлов ; born May 31 ^{. Jul} / 12. June  1893 ^greg. In Tomyschewo in Syzran ; † 2. October 1966 in Moscow ) was a Russian zoologist and paleontologist . From 1945 he was director of the Paleontological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Orlov studied zoology and anatomy at the St. Petersburg State University . He then taught at the Medical Faculty of Perm University from 1916 to 1924 , in the turmoil of the civil war at that time under sometimes very difficult conditions, and from 1924 to 1935 at the Institute for Brain Research and the Medical Military Academy in Leningrad. At that time he was working on the arthropod nervous system . From 1925 he began to deal with paleontology, his old love from his youth. He taught at the Mining Academy in Leningrad and from 1939 at the Lomonossow University in Moscow. Since 1939 he was a full member of the Moscow Society of Naturalists .

As a paleontologist, he dealt mainly with tertiary mammals and with the Therapsids (group of early mammalian relatives) of the Permian .

He was the editor of a fifteen-volume series Fundamentals of Paleontology .

Orlov was a member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences (corresponding member since 1953, full member since 1960) and was posthumously awarded the Lenin Prize in 1967 . In 1962 he became an honorary member of the Paleontological Society .

The Moscow Paleontological Museum , founded in 1937 (and opened in a new building in 1987) is named after him (Orlov Museum of Paleontology, Russian Палеонтологический музей им. Ю. А. Орлова ).
