Yuri Popov (1997)

Yuri Alexandrowitsch Popow ( Russian Юрий Александрович Попов , English Yuri Alexandrovich Popov ; born March 5, 1936 in Moscow , † November 16, 2016 in Lobnja ) was a Russian paleoentomologist and entomologist .

Life

Popov went to school in Moscow and graduated from Lomonosov University in 1959 with a degree in entomology with the thesis The Heteroptera Fauna of the Western Tian-Shan , based on finds he collected on an expedition to the Moscow Botanical Garden in 1957/58. From 1959 he was in the paleoentomology department (arthropod laboratory) at the Paleontological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. In 1969 he received his doctorate there ( on the historical development of water beetles of the infraorder Nepomorpha (Heteroptera) ). From 1981 he was a senior scientist there. He is a professor and curator (mainly responsible for bedbugs) at the Zoological Museum of Lomonosov University.

He is known for contributions to the higher taxonomy of bedbugs (Heteroptera), in which he introduced three out of seven infraorders ( Nepomorpha 1968, Gerromorpha 1971, Leptopodomorpha 1971). In total, he introduced over 20 new families, subfamilies and tribes of insects, evaluating compression fossils and amber inclusions from the Mesozoic and Cenozoic times from around the world. He took part particularly frequently in Soviet-Mongolian expeditions to Mongolia and led them for many years from the Soviet side (1975 to 1981). In addition to bed bugs, he also dealt with a few other groups, such as sheaths (coleorrhyncha).

Around 150 scientific publications originate from him.

From 1971 to 1975 he was secretary for international scientific contacts at the Soviet Academy of Sciences.
